Parachute’s Downtown Revitalization: Community Voices Shape the Future

Parachute is embarking on a significant downtown revitalization project, with community input playing a pivotal role in shaping its future. Residents have expressed a strong desire for a vibrant downtown that includes dining options, small shops, and mixed-use buildings. Emphasis has been placed on creating a traditional, human-scaled design featuring trees, shade, and communal gathering spaces.

These community-driven insights are guiding the development of an action plan aimed at implementing near-term improvements and outlining longer-term redevelopment strategies. The goal is to enhance downtown Parachute’s activity levels, walkability, and opportunities for local businesses.

In addition to the downtown revitalization, Parachute is addressing the need for affordable housing. The former Parachute Inn is being transformed into a 68-unit apartment complex, with the majority of units reserved for individuals earning below 100% of the area median income. This project aims to serve the growing ‘missing middle’ as Colorado River Valley towns face new workforce challenges.

Furthermore, the town is exploring the implementation of an on-demand transportation service to improve connectivity within Parachute, Battlement Mesa, and Rifle. This service would allow residents to request rides via an app, similar to existing ride-sharing platforms, enhancing mobility and access to local amenities.

These initiatives reflect Parachute’s commitment to fostering a thriving, inclusive community by addressing housing needs, enhancing transportation options, and revitalizing the downtown area based on residents’ input and aspirations.
