Explore Parachute: Parks, Trails & Outdoor Activities

Hi neighbors — Amelia Gomez here with a round-up of favorite parks and things to do around Parachute. Whether you’re craving a river float, a riverside walk, or just a peaceful spot to play, this guide has options to suit everyone’s pace.

Parks & Green Spaces in Town

Cottonwood Park

Located at 100 La Plata Circle, Cottonwood Park is Parachute’s go-to for families. It features a large pavilion, restrooms, playground, basketball court, open lawn space and the splash pad. On the edge of the park you’ll find a river trail maintained by Colorado Parks & Wildlife and a boat ramp that leads to the Parachute Ponds State Wildlife Area. Great for picnics and early morning walks.

Wasson-McKay Park & Beasley Pocket Park

Wasson-McKay Park (259 Cardinal Way) offers a large green space, ideal for frisbee, tossing the ball around, or lazy afternoons under trees. Beasley Pocket Park, downtown at 100 W 1st Street, is small but charming—bench, gazebo, shade—nice for quick meets or a stop while walking downtown.

Parachute Rest Area Dog Park

At 170 Green Street, the Parachute Rest Area includes a lawn, playground, restrooms, plus a fenced off-leash space for dogs. If you need somewhere both you and your pup can roam, this is it.

Outdoor Adventures & Wildlife

Parachute Ponds State Wildlife Area

This 26-acre facility sits along the town’s edge. Perfect for fishing (license required if 16+), birdwatching, short walks and quiet time by the water. Paths around the pond are flat, friendly for a stroll or morning coffee break.

Battlement Reservoirs & Nearby Trails

South of town is a chain of seven reservoirs amid stunning high mountain terrain. Hiking, primitive camping, fishing—this place delivers. Some terrain is rough (steep, rocky), so plan accordingly. Drive to trailheads when possible, or bring high-clearance vehicle/appropriate gear if going deeper.

Activities & Nearby Attractions Worth the Drive

Grand Valley Recreation Center

When you want something indoors—or just cooler—this 53,000 sq. ft. center offers a lot: swimming pool, indoor track, fitness classes, racquetball, team sports. It’s a solid option in every season.

Battlement Mesa Golf Club

If you love golf or just want to spend an afternoon in scenic greens, this club is just a mile south of Parachute. Views are wide and open, with a relaxed western slope setting.

River & Float Adventures

The Colorado River winds by town and offers rentals for rafting, kayaking, paddleboarding or tubing. For a relaxing float or full-day on the water, side channels and river access points make it easy to get out without leaving town for hours.

Weekend & Day-Trip Ideas

If you’ve got a free day or want to head a little further, consider:

  • Skiing or snowboarding at Powderhorn Resort (~35-45 minutes away), or exploring the trails on Grand Mesa when snow falls.
  • Visiting Rifle Falls or Rifle Gap State Parks for waterfalls, trails, and reservoir views.
  • Scenic drives: the Book Cliffs and Grand Mesa loop offer sweeping vistas, especially early or late in the day.

Whether you’re new in town or a longtime local—I hope this gives you some fresh ideas to get outside, recharge, and enjoy our slice of the Western Slope. Let me know if you want recom- mendations for hiking by ability level, fishing tips, or hidden gems around Battlement Mesa.
